Background
Javier Pérez de Frutos, PhD, is a research scientist at the Medical Image Analysis group of the Health Research Department at SINTEF, working on image analysis for medical applications and its synergy with robotic systems to assist clinical practice. He holds a background in electronics and automation engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, and was awarded a PhD in Data Technology and Computer Science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2023, focused on deep learning for image-to-image registration in laparoscopic surgery navigation. He is currently involved in several projects on assistive robotics for ultrasound image acquisition, in collaboration with St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim and the University Hospital of North-Norway in Tromsø.

Enhancing ultrasound examinations
Abstract
Ultrasound images are challenging to interpret and subject to the preferences of the radiologists. This has the potential of resulting on different diagnosis for the same patient at different sites. Through the synergy between robotics, advance control theory, and artificial intelligence for image analysis, it is possible to equip the radiologists with a tool capable of performing the ultrasound examination in a reproducible way and assist in the standardization of the diagnosis. Furthermore, it opens the possibility to supply remote point of care locations with advance diagnostic imaging, saving the trouble, money, and time because of needing to move the patients to the regional main hospital.
